Amtrak did rebuild a number of E for continued service on their eastern lines. Maybe that's them.
On the other hand, Amtrak sent a small number of its ex-UP E's to Morrison Knudsen in Boise and low-level overhauls and repainting around, oh, 1973 (WAF might know the dates and the units involved). Completed units moved dead in freight service Boise-Nampa-Ogden, then moved west on Number 5 to SP's West Oakland Diesel Shop where they were placed in service. Other than being shiny, the overhauled units weren't much better than the not-overhauled units, which were not highly thought of by SP's Operating or Mechanical departments.
