You are correct that the fire now is most threatening to the Middle Fork of the Feather River, especially the section leading down to Lake Oroville. However, both the railroad and Highway 70 do both follow the Middle Fork east of Spring Garden and both were threatened by the Claremont Fire.
The track changes from the North Fork of the Feather to the Middle Fork through a tunnel just east of Spring Garden. It follows the Middle Fork out thru Portola to Beckwourth. Highway 70 changes to the Middle Fork drainage at Lee Summit.
The fire spilled over into the North Fork drainage roughly between Williams Loop and Massack several days ago. For several days it looked like the railroad near Williams Loop was part of the fire line.
