All the early EMD E - Units also lacked forced air radiator fans, relying instead on side & rooftop convection vents. Many RR's applied various wind foils and such devices to try & improve air flow across these rooftop vents. EMD re - designed the rooftop, beginning with the E-8 model, to include rooftop fans; this also allowed room for a dynamic brake unit & fan. E-8 & E-9 cab units also had large, curved flush - fit numberboards on the nose.
