I saw many LCV's on my trip to Las Vegas & Laughlin in 2018. Lotsa LTL 28' triples, and a few 35 foot + 28 foot LTL doubles too. Also saw a very few twin 40's, but these were on I - 15 coming in from Utah. ( I was at Las Vegas Motor Speedway for the NASCAR K & N West Series DIRT race. ) I suspect the twin 40's may only be allowed due to them being legal in Utah. Triples are also legal on the 28 miles of Interstate 15 in the far Northwest corner of Arizona, owing to the states on either side allowing them, and not being allowed to use any of the 5 AZ. exits. The goofiest deal I saw was a Star Nursery 4 axle dump truck pulling TWO transfer dump box trailers !!! What a hassle that must be ?!?
Not sure about the tag axle rules; I've been told it is owner choice ( at least here in Washington State. ) Steerable is easier on both the tires AND the roads too, and the tractor tag can now be raised & lowered from inside the cab. Most tractor tag axles are now wired into the transmission shifter anyways. Anderson Hay out of Ellensburg has several tag - axle super port chassis that are also cab - controlled, with an extra pigtail. One neat thing up here is that a chained - up trailer tag axle counts as Good - to - Go for snow chain requirements, as long as it is down HARD and not bouncing.
