CA&E passenger service from the Chicago Loop to the western suburbs in Cook, DuPage, and Kane counties ceased in 1957 and the freight operation disappeared just two years later. Besides Illinois Railway Museum, the scenic and friendly Fox River Trolley Museum has a nice collection of CA&E equipment (wooden passenger cars 20, 316, and 317) that operates on the historic alignment of the Aurora, Elgin & Fox River Electric at South Elgin, which is much closer to Chicago than IRM at Union.
Also, one can still "ride" much of the former "Roarin' Elgin'; however, a bicycle is needed, as it is now the Illinois Prairie Path. A few depots, substations, and shelters remain as well.
