A real highway rebuilding program would require the federal gas tax to be adjusted for inflation since the last time it was raised, October 1, 1993. That would require an increase of 77% from the present 18.4 cents per gallon and 24.4 cents per gallon for diesel fuel. That would be 32.6 cents per gallon and 43.2 cents per gallon for diesel.

A real bargain when you compare it to other countries. We have the second lowest tax in the developed world, and that is including state taxes.
