The winding machinery at Washington & Mason carhouse was designed to accommodate the 2 cables of the Sacramento-Clay cable line. An extension west from Van Ness will require a second rope.

Fillmore was the initial terminus of the Cal Cable; it was extended to Presidio a few years later. From Fillmore west on California it is flat and the #1 trolley coach runs there now up to Steiner.
