Steam locomotives were labor intensive machines. It took a large group of personnel to keep them steaming along. Throw in the flexibility of multiple units, use of dynamic brakes and not stopping for water, diesels were pretty darn efficient.
Railroads employed a lot of roundhouse, boilermakers and shop craft. Continual boiler washes and blowdowns with flue cleaning. Lots of water and oil/coal stations to maintain.
How long does it take to start a diesel from a cold start?
Compare that with getting a steamer hot.
