The simple view was a latched valve on the tender and or cab. It would be connected to the train line.

If you didn't do what you were supposed to do, the latched valve would open and the train would come to a stop.

After stopping, the engineer or fireman would have to walk back and reset it by hand. Then the brake pipe could be pumped up and you could leave. (There would be a note on the big "O"s delay report. )
