I hear ya but it's still a camera. Watching the action through the viewfinder is not seeing the entire spectacle by a long shot.
I've used tripods, timers and remotes too but they were only slightly smaller distractions for me. Besides, those items also often lead to issues with Motivator #2.
Funny but I've never owned a cellphone. I worked an IT help desk for years taking 100+ calls on busy days; the last thing I want in my pocket is a phone. No landline either--it's email or snail mail to communicate with me.
All that said, it is amazing how good iPhone images can be. My niece took some night fireworks shots at the Eiffel Tower 5 or 6 years ago with her iPhone and those pics are freaking awesome (even at 8x10). Glad I hadn't spent a mint on a digital camera before then or I'd probably have pitched it in the river...
