Uncovering glitches during these initial runs is the purpose of testing new technology. EMD sent out test units with the outstanding 645 engine back in the mid 1960's and probably found a few things that could be improved.
This concert is interesting. According to Wabec it can produce 4,400 horsepower through its 4 traction motors for 30-40 minutes and can be recharged via a wayside facility in Stockton or via dynamic braking. So the unit can leave Stockton under a full charge and, presumably top off any battery deficit via dynamic braking until Edison where it can help lift the train to Tehachapi. Then recharge down to Mojavi and continue on to Barstow, etc.
