Purchased primarily for use on the Eastern Lines (basically, the Mid-West/Gulf Coast area). A few occasionally strayed to the Coast Lines in their later years (B-23's were much more common on the Coast Lines than the U23B's).

Retired between 1983 and 1988/89.
