Amidst towering high-rises, the sun is shining on METRO's opening weekend in downtown Phoenix, Arizona. December 27-28, 2008 saw over 150,000 riders try out the new 20-mile train service linking Phoenix, Tempe and Mesa. The original streetcar service, Phoenix Street Railway, operated just one block from this location until February 1948. In tribute to the old and new, restored Phoenix trolley No. 116 was positioned beside the new METRO light rail near the Phoenix Convention Center to celebrate in the festivites.
