BNSF 1600

Here is a little background information on BNSF 1600. Built as Northern Pacific 202 in June 1954, builder # 19546, It was part of NP's first GP9 order. It was assigned to the Camas Prairie railroad, a joint NP-UP operation based in Lewiston Idaho. It remained on the Camas Prairie into the BN era when it became the 1702. In 1975 it encountered a large rock and made a 90 degree turn into the Clearwater river. A fire further complicated things. By all rights this should have been the end of the story. However the craftsmen at the former GN Hillyard (Spokane WA) shops apparently convinced management to let them rebuild the 1702 on a "time available" basis. They worked on it for over two years. Management then announced that they were closing the Hillyard shops so the project took on some urgency. It emerged as a better than new loco with rebuilt components, updated wiring, a chopped short hood and white stripes on BOTH ends. Usually BN applied the white stripes only to the front end. It continued into the BNSF era when it became BNSF 1600 and was the first GP9 to receive the H1 paint scheme. Much of its later life it was assigned to Interbay shops in Seattle, but it did spend some time on former Frisco trackage, as well as in California. I understand that it wound up at CEECO with a bad main generator. Perhaps others can add to this brief history. It deserves to be preserved.
