Would that SMART were the Gold Line instead of a doodlebug.
Then we would have a real replacement for GGT's Awful 80 line.
DMU's are rail transit for people who are slightly sure they need rail transit but are pretty sure they can't afford it.
If you can't afford the wire you can't afford the rail.
Heavy rail like Caltrain offers amenities that make up for the diesel but watch how business will go up when they finally electrify it. 
Historically doodlebugs, dmu's, rdc's, etc. have always been the last ditch attempt, the final downgrade prior to abandonment of passenger service.
SMART is coming on like a loser right out of the gate. 
Oh and I would guess that commuter trains in Salt Lake actually go to Salt Lake City.
