The 1963 movie "Hud" was also based on McMurtry's "Horseman Pass By" and it, too, has a small recognition of trains. Among other locations, the movie was filmed in Claude and Childress, TX, along the FW&D, so I assume the passenger train shown is the "Texas Zephyr" or unnamed trains 7 or 8.
It's one of my favorite movies.
LONNIE BANNON (Brandon de Wilde): Man, it's a lonesome old night, isn't it?
HUD BANNON (Paul Newman): Ain't they all.

LONNIE BANNON: Boy, I love that sound. It goes right through me.
HUD BANNON: It scares the hell outta the cattle.
LONNIE BANNON: You know what trains always make me think about?
HUD BANNON: No, but I got a strong feeling you're gonna tell me.
LONNIE BANNON: I guess I just like 'em, that's all.
