Its called the hub and spoke system, you leave PDX and fly up to SEA to the Delta hub that aggregates flights from all over Pacific NW and board bigger plane going to east coast or midwest. It is very hard to find nonstops from DTW to PDX anymore. If your city doesnt have a hub, you are not getting a nonstop.
