Nearly 13 years earlier in the same location, one of the final eastbound AMTRAK Sunset Limiteds crosses the dry Salt River bridge in June 1996. The Sunset's secondary mainline routing through Phoenix was one of the victims of the 1996-1997 Amtrak hatchet job that also eliminated The Desert Wind and The Pioneer. Union Pacific's (former Southern Pacific) parallel bridge was built in 1912, will later be joined in 1999 by the new Tempe Town Lake and within a decade, METRO's new 2006/07-built light rail bridge.
