A westbound METRO train crosses the new Tempe Town Lake (Salt River) bridge en route to Phoenix on January 1, 2009. On a sunny New Years day downtown Phoenix can be seen in the distance 10 miles away. Union Pacific's (former Southern Pacific) parallel bridge was built in 1912, and still carries roughly ten freights per day.
