I wonder if this locomotive could have been set out on the dead line earlier than the end of steam.

I was at the Cheyenne roundhouse in the summer of 1960 and IIRC there were locomotives of different classes but not so many of the 800 series. They were in decent shape as it had not been a year since the end of steam again IIRC.

It would not have taken long for the UP to declare no more need for steam to be held in reserve for a boom in traffic. They certainly had a lot of impressive gas turbines in action at that time. So unless they kept this engine around for years for some reason my guess is was already bad order before the end of steam. Just a conjecture.
