Yesterday I posted a screenshot of the slide on a private Facebook group called 'Southern Pacific Survivors'. Its members are primarily retired railroad employees, mostly SP.

The general consensus is that this is Hinda, M.P. 559 on the LA Division, on the west side of Beaumont Pass. The area looks much different today.

The train is likely the 'Mountain Local', a peddler freight that operated between Taylor Yard in Los Angeles and Indio Yard, with crews out of the West Pool.
