There have always been 2 main tracks through there, so maybe when you went through there there was constuction going on and one of the mains was cut.
Currently, there are actually 3 main tracks through the station: Northern track is the UP (former SP) Alhambra Sub, midde track is track 1 (north main) of the UP LA Sub, former LA&SL adn the south track is track 2 (south main) of the UP LA Sub.
There are crossovers/connectors between the Alhambra and LA subs both east and west of the station.
