I was impressed by Youtubes of some Spanish HSR lines, with their huge bridges and tunnels to keep the grades - and especially grade changes - to a minimum even in mountainous territory. That's probably a better example of what's necessary in California than HSR adapted to a previously higher-speed conventional line.

Vertical curves are important for comfort and safety at speeds over 250 km/hr. Horizontal curves can be mitigated by superelevation. Vertical, not so much. It's the vertical curves that give the roller coaster feeling.
