That's not true.

I was hired as a fireman on the LA Division in 1971. The hostling jobs at Taylor Roundhouse were manned by hostlers and hostler helpers, with vacancies being filled off the fireman's extra board. My very first trip after marking up was as a hostler helper at the ramp, making $31.44. My hostler was Gary McClain, who was a fireman at the time (he'd later go on to be director of the Engine Service Training Center and an RFE).
