Of note is the brand new lead U33C BN 5738 built in July, 1971. At first glance I thought it was a GN U33C repaint (although the GN paint would have been only 2-3 years old) but then I noticed the new drawbar and MU hoses as well as the BN style amber warning light. A number check revealed the truth.
So this really does represent the new BN with units from NP, CB&Q, GN and BN. SP&S would have added the fifth.
My eyes can't read it but CB&Q GP40's were given BN numbers 3020-3039. At least one (CB&Q 629/BN 3029) was painted in the Cascade Green Burlington scheme prior to merger.
On a personal note my first trip through Livingston, MT was also in August on the North Coast Hiawatha that had barely been Amtrakized. It was a rainbow of color too. It was a great time to be around the new railroad.
