The reality is that Alitalia was primarily killed off by lower cost air carriers and not having enough international flights to feed its local system.

Trains had an impact. The overall market share of airlines dropped from 26% to 19.5% from 2015 to 2018. But they weren't the primary reason for Alitalia's demise.

Even the Mother of Fake News admits this:
