UP didn't haul coal out of Yakima as far as I know. UP cars tend to point to Utah Coal. Washington State Univerity got coal from Utah (often from Utah Railway as those hoppers sometimes showed up too) because it was clean burning and was what they call stoker coal, crushed like medium size gravel for use in heating plant stokers (it is also very clean burning coal as well)---I strongly suspect this is the type of coal Fairchild used as well. Coal mined in the Cascades is difficult to make into stoker coal as it is either sand or chunks, and not much in between. (Before people complain, locomotive stokers can use pit run coal as the stokers are larger and can handle the sandy stuff and the large chunks (to a point), power plants and household users go for the stoker coal crushed like gravel.)
