Referring to Bay Area public transport overall 2 resident problems always stick out: BART soaks up most all the major funding and the quality of planning is just terrible.

SF sets the standard. The Geary St. corridor is virtually guaranteed to be successful with any level of spending and improvement. It is short and dense and still enjoys a cluster of magnet destinations enroute. But it just sits there. Right off the top 3 section bi-articulated buses should be looked at; the patronage is there.

The Central Subway really was a downgrade of what should have been done. 3rd & Kearny with a crossing of Market St. at the mezzanine level could have saved a lot of money and it could have been extended through the Broadway Tunnel corridor to Van Ness whence in deep tunnel to Fillmore and Lombard. Presto you have rapid transit to the Marina.

Now they have to figure out what to do with the Central Stubway deadended at Washington Square. I cannot picture how they could proceed rationally from the general area of Kirkland Yard(the logical terminus of a subway extension to the Wharf)and then backtrack thru muck to the Marina. I believe there would have to be branching at Lombard St. and Columbus Ave and a tunnel to the west under Russian Hill. I expect to be amazed at the plan they propose.

It seems they always prefer the hardest and most expensive alternative.
