Re: Was "Expo 74" Reliant on the BN Merger?

GN and NP hired transportation consultants Wyer, Dick & Co. to perform a feasibility study on merging their two railroads, along with SP&S, CB&Q, and Pacific Coast Railroad. Work began in 1956, and by December 1957 "The Wyer Report," as it became known, was presented. The study recommended many of the changes to routes, terminals, and operations that were later implemented in the BN merger of 1970. In Spokane, the Wyer Report indicated the line consolidations much as we know them today, with a handful of exceptions. One of the more noteworthy of these exceptions is that Wyer in 1957 foresaw a connection off the west end of the Latah Creek Bridge that would use the existing SP&S up through the tunnel under Greenwood Cemetery to the GN connection at Fort Wright Jct. But as it turned out, the new line BN built in the early 1970s bypassed the tunnel, crossed Indian Canyon on a new high bridge, bypassed Fort Wright Jct., and bypassed the long loop north through Highland on its way up to Lyons. Over the years, I've only seen brief excerpts (and occasionally some maps) from the Wyer Report published in railway books or magazines, the most extensive of which was in Bob Del Grosso's "The Burlington Northern Railroad in 1993." A more exhaustive search online or at GN/BN archives maintained primarily in the Midwest might turn up a copy of the complete report.
