Whale, we had the rainbow era from 1971 thru about '74-'75, by which time a lot of the old conventional cars given by all the railroads that joined, were painted a silver mist as Amtrak called it and Budd cars stayed krispy shiney stainless steel with the pointless arrow of red, white and blue logos on either end of the cars. Length of that arrow was deterrmined by window location or spacing of windows and dutch doors. Out in the west, I can only speak of... Engines were still painted in the offering railroads colors, sometimes with the railroad name painted out in the offering railroads color. Some were given new Amtrak sky blue numbers, against a silver mist block if memory is fair. In the west, FP units and E's, eventually were painted main body silver mist, bloody red nose, black roof, large pointless arrow on it's side. Miss that backward logo.... Then the SDP-40F showed up looking boxy but bright. Just say SDP40F Wikipedia into yer phone and away the learning goes!!!
