Central Railroad of New Jersey, aka Jersey Central or CNJ, had the unfortunate circumstance of being headquartered in the state with the highest corporate & property taxes in the United States. New Jersey's high property taxes were a major reason so few historic heritage RR stations exist today; the RR's bulldozed them as soon as the local commuters switched to highways. CNJ also had to survive in a region overbuilt with railroads. Until the early 1960's,there were five major railroads ( CNJ, Erie, Lackawanna, PRR, NYC ) operating just between The Newark / Jersey City area and Buffalo, NY. The state & local authorities also required CNJ & other NJ railroads to continue operating money - losing commuter trains with only token financial assistance, until CNJ trustee Robert Timpany informed them at the monthly meeting that "... CNJ is shutting down next week." !!!
