Yes, you are not correct. I've seen the word "Espee" used in California newspapers at least as far back as 1900. For example, the June 24, 1900 San Francisco Call had this headline for an article: "The Espee Makes the $3.00 Excursion Rate Open for the Fair."

By the way, there is an Espee Street that parallels the former SP tracks just north of downtown Bakersfield.
