It is always tempting to paint a situation in the light of one’s preconceived notions. In this case we know Caltrain’s locomotives are very old (many approaching 40 years, with the replacement fleet years late), poorly maintained (as evidenced by frequent breakdowns and service delays, as well as thick sooty exhaust and wheels that often don’t sound quite round). That a failing prime mover would have showered sparks on the dry brush along the tracks is a perfect summary of their “state of good repair.”
