We learned there are 16k unprotected crossings. Can’t we drum up enough railfans to sit there with a handheld stop sign? Give ‘em an umbrella, double wide lounge chair, sack of burgers and a couple liters of coke…… crossings protected. Maybe an old Chevy van for inclimate weather and overnight (still working the details out) the crossing guards could watch for dragging equipment, hotboxes and hobos. The also could serve as docents to waiting motorists.
