Here's a photo I took on August 24, 1976, FORTY-SIX YEARS AGO, when I made a one-week trip to British Columbia and Alberta. This is Canadian National's Train # 1, the
Super Continental making its stop at the now-abandoned passenger station in downtown Edmonton. VIA RAIL, which was just in its infancy in 1976, now operates out of a different location on the northwest side of the city. The tall building on the right was the regional headquarters building for Canadian National and the passenger station was on the ground floor.
This train would take me back to Vancouver, being the third leg of the tri-angle of my western Canadian rail tour.
In 1976, CN / VIA was still offering RDC service from Edmonton to Drumheller and North Battleford. It would have been nice to have had the time and money that would have permitted me to ride and photograph those trains but, alas, that was not to be the case and those trains are now gone.
