I rode the northbound Redwood a few weeks before it was discontinued in 1971. I was vacationing in the area with my family and I talked my parents into letting me ride the train to Eureka while they drove by car. The train was down to twice-weekly departures and it was departing on the day we happened to be in Willits. I bought a rinky-dink Instamatic camera at the Rexall drug store so I have some photos of the trip, but not the best. Lousy photos are better than no photos.

My dad is not a railfan and he wanted me to be aware that he was able to drive faster from Willits to Eureka than what the train required. That might be at least one of the many reasons why the train no longer runs.

Like someone else mentioned, I wish now I would have ridden the North Coast Daylight but at least I was able to experience the Budd car. I saw that RDC again in May of 1992 at the railroad museum in Galveston, TX when I rode the now-defunct Texas Limited. It makes you feel old when you see a piece of equipment in a railroad museum that you rode in revenue service.
