As The Doctor noted, the trolley poles on some Espee diesels ( and a few lettered for Pacific Electric ) were only there to activate highway crossing signals. A few EMD SW - types also had them. After Pacific Electric / Metropolitan Coach Lines / National City Lines passenger service ended in 1961, Espee gradually converted the remaining freight lines to rail - actuated circuits.
I don't recall any East Portland Traction Co. / Samuels Metals / Oregon Pacific diesels having trolley poles, though their SW - 1 has a Espee tiger stripe paint scheme.
