multiple organizations are working together to get the line operating again to the Rose Garden. Yes, it is taking tooooo long but don't yet doom & gloom it. it is way too soon to say Metro hates the Zoo Railway.
The grass roots effort is a consortium of: Sylvan-Highlands Neighborhood and Arlington Heights Neighborhood Associations, the Oregon Rail Heritage Foundation and the Pacific Northwest Chapter, NRHS.
The neighborhood associations represent residents on both east and west sides of the Zoo.
Yes, the Washington Park & Zoo Railway is operating and operates on a short loop within the Zoo.
We have a geotech report developed by Shannon Wilson that says it is not a major lift to get the line rehab'd to operate to the Rose Garden. A tour of the line was scheduled for November 4th with participants including the Metro President, Zoo Director, Shannon Wilson representative and a representative from a well-known short line railroad but it got canceled as an atmospheric river and high winds were headed to Portland (not a good time to be in the woods).
Converting the rail line to a trail will not happen. Arlen
