AL Smith donated the Swanton Pacific rr and the 3000 (?) acre ranch to the Cal Poly ag engineering department when he died—- up until the disastrous fire 2 years ago it, and the ranch, were an integral and valued asset to the dept—- it is possible that the cost of salvaging/restoring this asset back to viability is too costly at this time and the school is preserving it until they can restore it. Female enrollment certainly has no affect on this situation.
