A very nice photograph with an interesting backstory...

UP must have been repositioning power, given the seven locomotives on the train. Notice also that the third unit is a standard cab GE, not a widecab, and that the only other GE is the Canadian Pacific unit (fifth in line).

The train would have been waiting for Amtrak #28 to clear, not #8. The Seattle section of the Empire Builder is #7-#8; the Portland section is #27-#28, and is due out of Portland at about 4:40 p.m., with its Vancouver stop at about 5:00 p.m. Having met the NB Coast Starlight at Vancouver, that also tells us that #14 is only slightly late (due out of Portland at about 4:00 p.m.), a vast improvement over the previous dreadful timekeeping inflicted on this train by UP.
