Model RR’ing hobby (?)

I have not looked at the hobby in decades. With the very accurate models available off-the-shelf today, do modelers still do custom detailing and kitbashing, or is model railroading mostly an out-of-the box hobby now? Just buy the trains in the color you want and run em?
