Effective at the close of shift on May 31, 2023, the UP Yardmasters, or in modern UP terms, the UP Yard Controllers positions at Sparks Nevada will be eliminated, and the Yard will be run by the Yard Crews themselves, under the direction of the local Manager. In my opinion, it is amazing to me that these positions lasted as long as they did, because right before UP took over SP on September 11, 1996, SP was looking into eliminating them back then. Although they earned their keep, when compared to what some other Yardmaster (UP Yard Controller) positions, were running multiple yards, such as the Clinton Iowa UP Yard Controller, also runs the Beverly Iowa Yard, via remote radios/cameras, and the phone.
