Was Alco thinking of resurrecting the GE 44-ton/center-cab idea but with an otherwise standard internal layout? If so, somebody was smoking something, and it might not have been the exhaust fumes. The little GEs had their problems too, but at least they had things like (in some anyway) exhaust pipes above cab roof level.
