All of the modes under discussion here have their place.
Looking at the specs of the FLIRT Akku, specifically with respect to SMART, one can see that having a thousand feet of catenary at each end of the route would allow recharging in ten minutes. Looking at the schedule, the turn around time is equal to or greater than this. The present route is less than 2/3 of the FLIRT Akku range, which is why the charge time is only ten minutes.
If one has excess off peak electricity production that would just go to waste otherwise, then the production of hydrogen by electrolysis is a fit. The fact that storing energy via electrolysis of water and compression of the resulting hydrogen is not as efficient as battery storage or direct use then becomes irrelevant. Present technology also gives the advantage of range to hydrogen over battery energy storage.
If you want speed over 130 mph or have a very busy route you are going to use catenary. Just for reference, the diesel speed record is 148 mph.
