CROCKETT, Calif. -- A rock slide that dumped debris on a major rail corridor Thursday delayed commuter and freight trains between the San Francisco Bay Area and Sacramento, but caused no injuries.

The slide occurred just before dawn about 25 miles northeast of Oakland.

NBC San Francisco reported that several large boulders were scattered on the tracks just outside the tunnel west of the Carquinez Bridge from Martinez to Richmond.

It initially covered both tracks, which carry 57 trains a day through the region, said Mark Davis, spokesman with Union Pacific Railroad.

A crew cleared the debris from one of the tracks, allowing trains to alternate moving east and west at a reduced speed.

By 8 a.m., four Amtrak commuter trains were delayed, and more would probably run late as work progressed throughout the day, said Karina Romero, an Amtrak spokeswoman.

"Something like this early in the morning causes a domino effect," said Romero.

Railroad passengers on the Capitol Corridor could expect delays of between one and two hours, a spokeswoman for Amtrak said.

Tracks in both directions between Richmond and Martinez were closed as crews from Union Pacific Railroad, which owns the track, cleared debris, according to NBC San Francisco.
