Another TRAINS story that might be interesting: Spain completed a line that HSR shares track with conventional freight. Includes a long (15ish miles) base tunnel through a mountain range. IOW, not too different from what the southern 1/3rd of CAHSR could be if operating conventional equipment on it were allowed (politics strikes again...). Cost something around $5B to build (so, cheaper than it would be in CA) and took 20 years to builf (so, not far off from a likely construction period for CAHSR). [
