Great stuff Bob! I was 5 years old in 1952. Greyhound was on strike and 3 & 4 were still in steam. We took the train from Eureka to Petaluma. Smoke entered the train in most tunnels, particularly Loleta and Island Mountain. (I'll bet SP management smiled over that?) One thing that stuck in my mind was a uniformed female employee who offered my mother a pillow and blanket for the overnight chair ride? Perhaps an SP independent contractor to make up some for killing the Pullman service ? After the December 1955 flood the entire trainset sat in the Eureka trainshed for the first half of 1956 while SP and the PUC fought to end the service.
