The fleet of boxcars has dwindeled since the 1950's from 900 thousand to less than 100 thousand boxcars today. I suspect most boxcars loads today either originate or terminate on shortlines. The time and cost of spotting a boxcar goes against the PSR scheme. The class 1's have removed thousands of spurs serving industries , closed yards, and retired switch engines since this photo was taken.
