Actually, the traffic on Highway 70 was no where near as bad as I expected. The rain must have kept a lot of the casual, daisy picker types away plus the CHP engaged in a "show of force" with several units roving up and down the road. At Rock Creek, an officer in an SUV type vehicle got on his loudspeaker and told everyone that the train was about a minute behind him.
CalTrans had at least two electronic message board trucks out warning the unsuspecting of people on the road.

I can say that I did not see any cases of outright carelessness other than a few of the self-indulgent "pacers", who don't give a rat's ass about anyone else, plugging up traffic.

Another helpful thing was the fact that 844 was following a hi-rail escort which kept their speed down and required a few stops while the escort removed rocks.
