What's a "spare" engine or anything else? Amtrak doesn't understand the question.
Back in ancient days, Cal Amtrak would borrow or rent (not sure how the deal works) a BNSF freight engine when a then-newish F59PH coughed its last in Bakersfield. Happened several times. With the freight engine on the point the train was limited to 70 instead of 79. Interesting that on one occasion the freight motor was on both my morning train (with bus to Sacramento), and the evening train returning home. Was told the evening thing was not that the F59 was still broken (was replaced with a working one in Oakland), but that they had to return it to BNSF the same day. So we were a little late both ways...
